Katy Perry had a #1 summer smash when she kissed a girl back in 2008, and now she’s getting ready to release her latest ode to girls, “California Gurls.”

“California Gurls” is the first single off Perry’s upcoming sophomore effort, the follow-up to her multi-platinum “One of the Boys.” The song finds her re-teaming with Max Martin and Dr. Luke, who also helmed her hits “Hot n Cold” and “I Kissed a Girl.”

“I brought them this title, this idea. I was like you know it’s so great that ‘Empire State of Mind’ is huge and everybody has like the New York song,” Perry told Rolling Stone about her first single. “But what the f—? What about L.A.? What about California?”

“It’s been a minute since we’ve had a California song and especially from a girl’s perspective,” she said of “California Gurls,” which impacts radio at the end of the month. “So we took the references of Prince, which is always a great reference, and we took a lot of like 90’s kind of like, ‘Baby if you want me, you got to show me love,’ you know that almost house music, some of those references.”

Perry’s worked with a slew of top producers for her as-yet-untitled album, including Tricky Stewart, Greg Wells, Ryan Tedder, and Benny Blanco. While a track listing has yet to be released, some possible song titles include “Circle the Drain,” “Dressing Up,” and “Not Like the Movies.”

The album’s first single was also rumored to feature rapper Snoop Dogg. While it might be released sans the rapper first, he could appear on a remix. Perry’s album is due out in the summer.
