Reese won an Academy Award for her work in the 2006 Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and has secured the rights from Peggy’s estate to make a film about her journey from obscurity to music superstardom. Witherspoon will co-produce the film, which will chart the ups and downs of Peggy’s incredible career and personal life, and Julia & Julia director Nora Ephron is being courted to pen the screenplay.

Peggy died in 2002 at the age of 81, but enjoyed a career that spanned nearly seven decades. Lee was an accomplished singer, actress, songwriter, composer, a Grammy Award winner, and even voiced the character “Darling” in Disney’s 1955 animated classic Lady and the Tramp.
