The Big Apple may be the “Concrete Jungle Where Dreams Are Made Of,” but it’s no longer the ideal city to take in a free concert. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has pulled the plug on a scheduled performance by Jay-Z above the marquee at Manhattan’s Ed Sullivan Theater over security concerns.

Monday’s show which would have been hosted by the Late Show with David Letterman, has been scrapped on the heels of a riot that ensued when between 15,000-20,000 shouting, shoving fans convened at Manhattan’s South Street Seaport for a free concert featuring Drake and Hanson. The crowd got out of control, leaving dozens injured, after news of the show leaked online ahead of scheduled. Jay-Z’s show was also meant to be a secret, but word leaked Thursday and the Mayor’s office has canned the appearance to prevent another potential riot.

“Many permits are granted on the condition that the event is not made public beforehand for capacity and security reasons. This event was made public,” a rep from the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting said Friday.
